How to choose a new bed

Selecting a new bed is one of the most important decisions you can make for your home and overall wellbeing. As we spend approximately a third of our lives sleeping, your bed must be more than just a piece of furniture. It should be a place of comfort and relaxation that promotes deep sleep.

At Potburys, we know how overwhelming it can feel with so many styles, sizes, and options available. So, here’s our simple guide to help you choose the perfect bed for you.

1. Size

First things first, what size bed do you need? Here are your options:

  • Single (90cm x 190cm) – ideal for children or compact guest rooms.
  • Double (135cm x 190cm) – can be snug for two but spacious for one.
  • King size (150cm x 200cm) – ideal for couples who like extra room to stretch.
  • Super king (180cm x 200cm) – the ultimate in space and luxury.

Measure your room and consider the available space. Ideally, you’ll want to be able to move comfortably around the bed once it’s in place.

2. Style

Your bed should match your home décor as well as your comfort needs. Your style options include:

  • Traditional wood frame – for a timeless look.
  • Upholstered – soft and stylish.
  • Metal frame – modern or industrial style.

At Potburys, we stock a wide range of bed styles, from classic wood frames to luxury divan sets.

3. The mattress

The bed frame creates style and support, but the mattress is what really matters. When it comes to choosing a mattress, there’s a lot to consider:

  • Firmness – the right firmness depends on your sleeping position, body type, and personal comfort preferences. Soft to medium is ideal for side sleepers, as it cushions shoulders and hips, helping to maintain spinal alignment. Back or stomach sleepers may prefer a firmer mattress.
  • Filling – different fillings and structures offer different benefits. You’ve predominantly three types to choose from:
    • Pocket-sprung: Hundreds of individual springs in fabric pockets move independently to offer tailored support. Great for couples, as it minimises movement transfer.
    • Memory foam: Contours to your body, relieving pressure points. Particularly suited to side sleepers and those with joint or back pain.
    • Hybrid: Combines springs with foam or latex layers for the best of both worlds.
  • Turn-free or double-sided – turn-free mattresses are single-sided, so you only need to rotate them head-to-toe. These are ideal for lower maintenance and easier handling. Double-sided mattresses are designed to be flipped regularly, which can extend their lifespan and keep them feeling fresh for longer.

We always recommend trying mattresses in-store. Our team is on hand to help you find your perfect match.

4. Storage

If you’re short on space, a bed with built-in storage is an ideal solution. You’ve got two options here:

  • Ottoman beds - lift up to reveal storage space beneath the mattress.
  • Divan beds can come with drawers, making them perfect for storing bedding, clothes, or shoes.

5. Test it in person

You’re going to spend a lot of time in your bed, so it pays to test it out first. At our Sidmouth showroom, you can lie on different mattresses, try out various styles, and seek advice from our knowledgeable team.
