About Us

Potburys of Sidmouth has been part of the town’s High Street since 1861, when it started trading as a furnisher and auctioneer, offering what was known as the complete furnishing service. With a shop in the heart of Sidmouth and separate premises for the removals service and auction rooms, Potburys quickly established itself as a trusted name for all things furniture.

More than 160 years on, we’re still here, proudly serving generations of local customers and visitors alike. Today, we offer everything the discerning homeowner needs, from sofas and beds to soft furnishings, lighting and finishing touches for every room. While the collections have evolved over time, our values haven’t. We continue to believe in integrity, personal service and well-made furniture that’s built to last.

Potburys remains an independently owned, family-run business, now in the care of the Lee family, who are proud to carry forward the traditions established by our founders.

The Lee family’s journey with Potburys began in 1942, when Terence Lee joined the business as an office boy straight from school. Through dedication and hard work, he rose through the ranks and became part owner upon the death of the last surviving Potbury family member.

In 1981, Terence’s eldest son Michael Lee joined Potburys, bringing with him valuable experience gained at other furniture retailers. When Terence retired in 1989, after 47 years with the business, Michael took on the role of Managing Director.

The family story continues today with Paddy Lee, Michael’s middle son, joining the business in 2018. Paddy is now the Managing Director, ensuring Potburys continues to offer the same warm welcome, expert advice, and trusted service that customers have relied on for generations.

We’d love to welcome you into our Sidmouth showroom to explore our collections, meet the team and experience Potburys for yourself.
