Leather vs fabric sofas – which is right for you?

Choosing a new sofa is a big decision. It needs to feel comfortable, look good and last well. A key decision you’ll need to make when deciding on your new sofa is whether to choose leather or fabric. 

Both materials have their merits, so the decision ultimately comes down to how you live. Here's what to consider.

Leather sofas

Leather sofas have timeless appeal. They look smart in many settings, from a traditional living room to a contemporary open-plan space, and they age well. A good-quality leather sofa can actually improve over time as the leather softens and develops a unique character.

From a practical point of view, leather is easy to wipe clean, making it a good choice if you have young children or pets. Spills tend to sit on the surface rather than soak in, so accidents are easier to clean up. Leather is also less likely to hold onto pet hair than many fabric options.

One thing worth knowing is that leather can feel cool to the touch in winter, so it’s not quite as cosy as fabric.

Fabric sofas

Fabric sofas offer something you won’t get with leather – softness from the moment you sit down. There's no breaking-in period, and the range of colours, textures and patterns is vast. Whether you're after a classic neutral or something with a bit more personality, you'll find it in fabric.

Fabric used to be more of a high-maintenance option, but technology has evolved fabrics a long way. Many are now treated to be stain-resistant and are surprisingly hardwearing. 

If you like to update your look every few years, fabric also offers more flexibility when it comes to styling.

A few questions to consider

Before you decide between leather and fabric, consider how the sofa will be used. Is it the main family sofa, or for a quieter room? Do you have pets or young children? How much natural light does the room receive? Dark leather in a bright room can look striking, while a soft, textured fabric can suit a cosier space.

It's also worth thinking about longevity. Leather tends to be a long-lasting investment, while fabric gives you more room to change your mind down the line.
